This dresser started off as a $10 craigslist find. As I was looking for furniture to restore I found this on craigslist located right here in Bay View. When I came on the dresser it smelled like cat pee and smoke. The guy selling it did disclose this. I did notice the sticker on the back indicating Davis Cabinet Company, and I remembered that as my friend Josh said "the re-re brothers on Antique's Road Show" are always talking about Davis Cabinet Company. I am not a fan of Mid Century Modern furniture style but this dresser had easy lines and appeared to be in a shape where all parts were there. The Dresser was nearly black and stained and filthy. I began by using a gel stripper on the piece. I quickly learned that wood had a nice grain pattern. I was convinced that the dresser was Maple, but I figured that it is probably Beech wood. I was not familiar with this wood, but it has a great grain. After stripping it I cleaned it by sanding it down and getting rid of most of the scratches. one scratch was so deep that I could not get it sanded out and could not fill it with anything. I used a pre-stain conditioner and stained it an English Chestnut stain. After it was stained I applied 4 coats of Lacquer brush on finish. The finish turned out great, and after sanding between coats and using 000 steel wool the finish looks great. THe insides of the drawers I used a tung oil finish, as this area will not get as much wear or get exposed like the outside. I also felt that having a rough texture was important so that there was a distinction between the woods. The drawers were made of oak. I offered the dresser for sale to my friend first so I will see what he thinks when he sees it if he wants to buy it.
